A.W. v. Microsoft

A.W., et al. v. Microsoft Corporation, No. 26-2-26702-2 (King County, WA)

In August 2026, Plaintiffs K-12 students filed a consumer-privacy class action in King County Superior Court, Washington. The lawsuit alleges that Microsoft unlawfully extracts vast troves of sensitive data from students who are required to use Microsoft 365, Windows, Edge, and related Microsoft tools for schoolwork. The students allege that Microsoft commercializes that data in a host of ways, including by building intimate student profiles and generating invasive student analytics.

Plaintiffs further contend that Microsoft takes and exploits student information without obtaining informed parental consent. They allege that Microsoft instead purports to shift its duty of obtaining parental consent to school districts while maintaining exclusive control over its proprietary data systems.

The suit claims violations of Washington state consumer-protection and privacy laws, seeking injunctive relief and statutory damages on behalf of affected Washington students. :
